As of April 1, 2009, the JPO permitted applicants to defer payment of the official fee for a request for examination for one year. Originally, this ability to defer payment was to continue for two years, and it was going to end on March 31, 2011.

However, the JPO decided to extend the time for one year in view of economy and to support strategic determination of intellectual property for corporations. Therefore, the ability to defer payment of the fee for requesting examination will continue until March 31, 2012.
