Amendment to the Law on the Reissuance of Patent/Registration Certificates

March 14, 2025

Starting on January 1, 2025, the requirements for requesting a reissuance of a patent/registration certificate were relaxed. Previously, reissuance requests were limited to cases of defacement, damage, or loss. However, under the new regulations, requests can be made regardless of the reason. Additionally, the submission of the original patent/registration certificate will no longer be required in cases of defacement or damage. The Japanese Patent Office reissuance fee is 4,600 JPY.

The reissued patent/registration certificate will be identical to the one originally issued at the time of registration. The certificate cannot be reissued with an updated rights holder name after a name change or rights transfer.

If there are multiple rights holders and a reissuance is requested for each individual, a separate reissuance fee will apply to each certificate.

Even if the original patent/registration certificate was received in electronic format at the time of registration, the reissued certificate will be provided exclusively in paper form.

A reissued patent/registration certificate will be issued approximately three to four weeks after the submission of the request for reassurance of patent/registration certificate.
